PALOMA Profiles: Gabrielle Penfold

Sydney-based artist Gabrielle Penfold, speaks to PALOMA about what it is to create from an authentic place. The way culture, nature, and finding beauty in the simple moments inspire her life, and her work.

A social and creative soul - Gabrielle is one of those people who have an aura about them, that makes you curious to understand who they are, and the story they have to tell.

This, Gabrielle does through her art, and we invite you to read more from Gabrielle in her interview with PALOMA Profiles.

Tell us about your journey to becoming a professional artist? Was creativity a part of your home and upbringing? How would you describe the artist you are today, and the type of art you create?

I grew up in a creative environment where my parents encouraged me to draw and paint. They fostered curiosity and a love for learning which influenced my work. Today, I create art that is influenced by study and research. I believe that colour and subject matter are of the utmost importance in my artist expression, as they play a vital role in conveying emotions and messages.

You seem to take inspiration from travels, nature, and other cultures in the creation of your artwork? Tell us what inspires your creative visions? What story are you inspired to illustrate through your work?

Traveling to different cultures and exploring nature inspires my creative vision. I find beauty in the simplicity of small moments and aim to capture them in my paintings. I find great motivation in the colours I encounter, and they play a pivotal role in my paintings. I seek to capture the beauty of simplify and small moments.

You seem like a vivacious personality and social butterfly. What does connection mean to you, and who are the most important people in your life?

I often Joke about being a “lonely artist’, but the truth is, my social life plays a pivotal role in my creative process. The connection I have with my close friends and family is essential for creating interesting and meaningful work. Their presence and support fuels my inspiration and brings richness to a painting!

At PALOMA, the idea of ‘SELF’ is a core pillar to our brand, our service, and our community. What does ‘Self Care’ mean to you? How do you take care of yourself, and what are your ‘Self-Love’ practices and rituals?

Having moments of self care and practicing little rituals help declutter my head. Setting aside time for these moments, allows me to focus entirely on work and relationships. For me it comings down to moving my body everyday. I also love to treat myself to so special massages, kinesiology and a facial.

What does ‘Wellbeing’ mean to you, how do you cultivate this in your life?

Wellbeing means balance and contentment. I cultivate it through relationships, my craft and self-care. These simple practices nurture my wellbeing.

As a sustainable salon, environmental sustainability is of prime importance to us - what does environmental sustainability mean to you? What practices and measures do you take in your life - personal and professional to support the cause, and how would you like to invite others to do the same?

When it comes to sustainability, being mindful of what I consume is key for me. I ask myself, “Do I really need this?”. That mindset goes beyond just my personal choices. The service I use need to align with my values too. I make sure to check if they’re truly sustainable, just like the salon!

Lastly, of course we have to ask. Who does your hair at PALOMA Salon, what do you get done, and what hair products do you use?

Paloma at Paloma! At the moment I’m using R+Co Television.
